Bugando Medical Centre Zonal Hospital, Mwanza (Tz)

Bugando Medical Centre (BMC) in Mwanza is one of the largest healthcare institutions in Tanzania with over 1000 inpatient beds. Its large and impressive footprint is located on the shores of Lake Victoria. As a Zonal Referral Hospital, it plays a hugely important role in the provision of healthcare for the entire Lake Zone, as well as looking after the local population of Mwanza. It is a well equipped and very forward thinking institution, at the forefront of healthcare provision and development in Tanzania. It is, for example, one of the early adopters of laparoscopic surgery.

On hearing about the successes of the AMHSI in the Northern Zone, and extension of the project into the Central Zone, BMC were keen to be involved and for expansion of the project into the Lake Zone. We are very grateful to Director Dr Massaga for the invitation and to Dr Sr Massenga (Director of Surgical Services) for her vision and support. Dr Kotecha (Head of General Surgery) and Dr Binde (Project Lead) welcomed us warmly and looked after us well. The induction programme undertaken was incredibly successful (and notable as our largest to date at that time). BMC were enrolled as an AMHSI centre in November 2023.
