SWIFTSS – Charitable Trust

A UK based charitable trust established in 2019 with the goal to help improve surgical care in Africa through collaboration, education and training.

Our first major workstream is the Affordable Mesh Hernia Surgery Initiative.

The project has been rebranded in 2023 following expansion of the Tanzania National Mesh Hernia Project (TNMHP).  A highly successful original collaboration with the Tanzania Surgical Association (TSA) that began in 2019 and has the ambitious aim to establish mesh hernia surgery as the gold standard approach to inguinal hernia repair throughout Tanzania. This tangible ‘vehicle’ of mesh hernia surgery has been chosen as it enables many other critical (but less easily measured) aspects of surgical care to be improved concurrently.

The early successes of the TNMHP have led to interest from other countries. We now have a new ‘sister’ project running in Sierra Leone, with others in development.
