Christian and Mark speak at the Southern Surgical Conference

April 2026

We are delighted to have supported this excellent Medical Student Conference. In its second year, the high quality programme was fantastic to be part of. Christian and Mark were recruited to give two keynote presentations. Mark’s ‘Musings of a Travelling Surgeon’ was up first and had him setting the Global Health scene, before dipping into his own personal experience. He highlighted the stark realities of global health inequality, as well as emphasising the incredibly rewarding nature of the work we are involved in. That proved an excellent ‘warm up act’ for Christian, who then shared his experience of the Affordable Mesh Hernia Programme and the remarkable successes we have had.

Further talks covered Cardiothoracic surgery in war zones, the establishment of overseas Royal College accredited satellite skills courses, and Global MaxFax surgery. We also listened to (and help score) medical student prize presentations. The afternoon saw an impressive programme of skills workshops.

It is fantastic to be able to help shape the narrative of Global Surgery. Many thanks to the organisers, who did a brilliant job. It is quite remarkable really that a Medical Student Society can put together, and execute, such a high quality programme. Excellent work!
