SWIFTSS work used as a case study on the University of Winchester BA International Development Course

October 2020

Mark was invited to give a virtual guest ‘lecture’ and seminar on the BA (Hons) International Development: Global Health course; week 5: The Determinants of Health. Entitled ‘An African Perspective’, the students explored the differences between healthcare provision in Tanzania and the UK.

The technology (MS Teams), behaved and the discussions were thought provoking and hopefully helpful to the students. The differences highlighted are significant. One striking ‘tangible metric’ is that there are just 350 specialist surgeons in Tanzania (across all specialties) compared with over 8000 in the UK (and this does not count all those engaged in UK higher surgical training programmes).
